Rooftop solar power system – huge benefits

Rooftop solar power system is the solar power system installed on the roof, or associated with a construction project invested by an organization or individual, and is connected and sold to the electricity grid of the Electricity Corporation of Vietnam (EVN).

Rooftop solar power system helps to save investment costs

Thanks to its small scale and scattered installation, the rooftop solar power system is usually connected to the currently low and medium voltage grid, no need of investment in additional transmission grid system. During peak time of electricity usage, or hot weather, solar power systems generate to self-supply partly or all of the electrical load demand of the household consumer, and can be sent to the grid to reduce the overloading of substations, and the possibility of electrical incidents.

Depending on the scale of installation, the system can supply the customers with 100% amount of the electricity (which is, if redundant, generated onto the grid during the day, while used less at night); or can help to reduce the power consumption indicators (customers only have to pay for electricity at low prices, levels 1-2-3), without any cost, or reduce the cost of buying high-priced electricity (levels 4-5-6). The amount of electricity in excess is sold to power companies at prices of 9.35 UScents/kWh (2134 VND/kWh, in 2019).

The roof is insulated with a solar panel system that helps to reduce heat for houses, manufacturing zones, offices and power consumption of air conditioners. Because the system does not use battery, there is no need to spend money on battery investment and maintenance. In particular, this system has a lifespan of over 30 years that helps to bring long-term economic and environmental efficiency.

Economic efficiency of rooftop solar power system

The model of rooftop solar power has been bringing remarkable economic efficiency: The state does not need to invest in the construction of power plants, substations, transmission lines; Power companies reduce power overload and electrical incidents. For remote areas, highlands, islands, … rooftop solar power brings high effeciency in terms of politics and society. In addition, rooftop solar power also helps households to reduce electricity costs while also brings profits from electricity trading with power companies.

Due to the geographical location and climate, the horizontal radiation value of Vietnam ranges from 897kWh/m2/year to 2108kWh/m2/year, which is equivalent to the value from 2.46 kWh/m2/day to 5.77 kWh/m2/day. The total available area is very large, accounting for nearly 14% of the total national area, with available technical potential up to 1,677,461 MW, and expected power output of 262,327 TWh/year.

However, in order for this model to develop quickly and sustainably, the Government should consider the support mechanism for concessional loans and develop technical standards to ensure quality, safety and efficiency for customers, as well as the grid system.
