According to Mr. Hung, the annually installed capacity of rooftop solar power (solar PV) customers by 2020 is nearly 5,000MWp, increased by 26 times compared to 2019, so the capacity of solar PV in the South has surpassed the largest hydroelectric plants in the North such as Hoa Binh, Son La … This shows that the renewable energy in the past period developed very rapidly, which is the characteristic of the southern regions.
However, according to Mr. Hung, because solar power is getting “so hot” that the dispatch and transmission systems cannot catch up, making it difficult to release all solar power capacity. Therefore, the suspension of connection to new projects after December 31, 2020 is also an opportunity for the electricity industry to review and recalculate the capacity of connection to release capacity of each area, as well as the proposed additional investment on transmission system.
“Solar power is unevenly distributed, concentrated in areas with high heat radiation, so the transmission system is under load and does not release capacity; The investment in transmission systems takes years, while a solar power project only takes a few months to complete investment, which is the reason why the transmission system has not kept up with the development of solar power”, Mr. Hung added.
The development of solar power across the country is also “very hot”, according to the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) report, by the end of December 31, 2020, the whole country had 101,029 rooftop solar power projects connected to the power system with a total installed capacity of up to 9,296 MWp. The total installed capacity of solar power nationwide has reached about 19,400 MWp, equivalent to about 16,500 MW, accounting for about 25% of the total installed capacity of power source of the national power system; The national solar power output for the whole year 2020 is 10.6 billion kWh, of which, rooftop solar power is 1.15 billion kWh, accounting for about 4.3% of the total mobilized output of the whole National Electricity System.
