Danish electricity corporation proposed to launch offshore project in Hai Phong

The Orsted Group (Denmark) proposed to do research on a 3,900 MW project, with an estimated investment of 11.9 to 13.6 billion USD.

On the afternoon of November 2, Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Tho chaired the meeting with the delegation of the Danish Embassy in Vietnam led by Mr. Troels Jakobsen, Commercial Counselor.

The meeting with the content of the offshore wind power project in Hai Phong city proposed by the Orsted Group to conduct research and survey.

The project proposed by this enterprise has a total capacity of 3,900 MW, and is divided into 3 stages. Wind output is expected to be about 13,665,600 MWh/year; while wind turbines are expected to be about 20 MW in capacity. A tower’s height ranges from 150-200m.

The project location is offshore, 14 km in the southeast of Bach Long Vy island; The northwest is 36 km from Long Chau archipelago, 88 km from Cat Ba island, 76 km from Tien Lang district, 74 km from Kien Thuy district, and 70 km from Do Son district. The total investment is estimated to be whithin the amounts of 11.9 to 13.6 billion USD.

The project is evaluated to be appropriate with the orientation of Vietnam’s National Energy Development Strategy, with the viewpoint of prioritizing the exploitation and consumption of renewable energy sources.

Mr. Troels Jakobsen expressed his hope that the friendly cooperation relationship between Denmark and Hai Phong in the upcoming time will continue to be promoted in fields such as economy, trade, investment, education, tourism, and economic transformation to a green economy.

Highly appreciating the Orsted Group’s performance in offshore wind power development, Hai Phong Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Tho affirmed that he would pay attention and create favorable conditions for the investors.

In order to ensure the feasibility during the planning implementation and research later on, Mr. Tho asked the investor to provide more documents and add the issues raised by departments and agencies at the meeting, and to complete the documents to make the project highly feasible.

Vice Chairman of Hai Phong also requested the group to review and clarify the contents related to the surveyed location, the appropriate distance to arrange the wind turbines with a view not only to combining and rationally developing the marine environment scientifically, but also to ensuring compliance with the current regulations, the investment phases, while not affecting the region’s maritime, security and defense.

Orsted is a leading enterprise in the field of offshore wind power owned by the Danish Government.

In 2020, the revenue of this business was 8.6 billion USD, while its profit was 3 billion USD. At present, Orsted is supplying green energy worldwide to more than 15 million people, and this number is expected to double by 2025.
