Standards for solar panels are soon required

Conference on rooftop solar power development in Vietnam

Mr. Hoang Manh Tan, Deputy Director of Son Ha Group and Director of Son Ha Energy Development Joint Stock Company, said there was a problem concerning poor production of solar panels, and proposed to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to create standards for these panels soon.

On the morning of August 25th , in Hanoi, Vietnam Sustainable Energy Alliance (VSEA), Vietnam Coalition for Climate Action (VCCA), Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) and other partners held the 2020 Renewable Energy (RE) Week of Vietnam.

Vietnam 2020 Renewable Energy Week, which  was a series of events and seminars with the message “A breakthrough for recovery and green development for a peaceful life”, was conducted in August 25th and 28th.

On the morning of August 25th, there was a seminar about “Development of rooftop solar power in Vietnam: Benefits, bottlenecks and solutions to remove” with 3 topics: Current status of rooftop solar power development, long-term policy to exploit the potential of rooftop solar power in Vietnam, and financial clearance for rooftop solar power.

Notably, in the financial clearance session for rooftop solar power, Mr. Hoang Manh Tan – Deputy Director of Son Ha Group and Director of Son Ha Energy Development JSC, said that there was a problem of poor quality solar panels production and expressed his concern if these panels were used for rooftop solar power systems.

“The solar battery standard is currently waiting for the official announcement from MOST. We are acknowledged that there are already standards for solar panels but it is very hard to check. Vietnam Power Corporation (EVN) is also unable to evaluate all products and in need of specific standards. Importers must also have clear criteria for checking. Some solar panels which do not meet the standards are still available the market. Even poor quality solar panels of grades B and C were manufactured in Vietnam and then exported to China. But who knows they would return to Vietnam?” – Mr. Tan said.

Therefore, Deputy Director of Son Ha Group said that if businesses are only competing on price, they will definitely sell poor quality products and in the next 5-7 years, it will be hard to handle malfunctioned solar panels.

Talking about the financial clearance for rooftop solar power, Mr. Tan said that there should be a link with a number of banks and there are exclusive programs for solar energy development, thereby advising people to develop solar power on every roof.

Regarding huge potential of rooftop solar power for socio-economic development in spite of increased electricity prices, especially progressive electricity, installing solar power to cut off high-priced progressive electricity is also a way people are making use of. However, this is a new source of energy, so it requires higher costs.”- Mr. Tan said.

Sharing the way of Son Ha Group, Mr. Tan affirmed, benefits will determine the factors.

“In addition to installing rooftop solar power system, the group also leases roof area for installation, and have business association with units that have roofs for installation. The investment costs supported by the bank will be retrieved in about 5-7 years.”, said Deputy Director of Son Ha Group.

To develop solar energy, take the representative of Son Ha Group as an example, countries around the world develop rooftop solar power not because of their economies but because of their honor. Enterprises should be encouraged to install solar power systems at companies and offices. For the people, it is necessary to propagate so that they know the function and proceed to install the solar energy system. “Citizens of Europe or developed countries use solar energy and feel proud. In Vietnam, it is necessary to propagate for citizens to use the solar energy system like the evaluation criteria for cultural families ”, Mr. Tan proposed.
