Natural disasters, storms, floods, spring tides …., are getting more complicated, affecting the efficiency of power supply in Ho Chi Minh City area. To tackle the problems, Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC) has developed multiple solutions to ensure safe and stable power supply.
Ensure safe electricity supply
In the season of rainstorms in Ho Chi Minh City, the frequent occurrence of thunderstorms and tornadoes causes the trees outside high-voltage power grid safety fences, tarpaulins, signboards that are old or unstable to fall onto the power lines, which result in difficult grid operation and unwanted electrical incidents for the local residents.
Ho Chi Minh City is known to be the most populated city of Vietnam. When there are heavy rains and spring tides, its routes and low areas have to suffer from severe flooding. Worth mentioning, spring tides usually occur in the evenings when people get back home from work (rush hour traffic jam) makes it hard when moving on roads for not only the residents but also the staff of power companies.
To fix the issues and ensure safe power supply in this year’s season of rainstorms, Mr. Nguyen Huynh Dang Khoa – Head of EVNHCMC’s HSE said, ‘Before rainy season, EVNHCMC had taken many active approaches, such as: Checking protective fences of high-voltage grids, examining all the areas that are low and easily get affected by weather conditions, promptly implement renovation, maintenance and repair the damages. Also, coordinate with the local authorities of the urban areas, tree service companies, advertisement boards, tents, shacks, … that are likely to fall or fly onto the power lines and substations during rainstorms.
Especially, in order to raise people’s awareness about electrical safety in seasons of rainstorms, the corporations are paying close attention to the propagation of electrical safety knowledge to the consumers. Power companies shall work closely with The People’s Committees of districts and wards, Police Departments of fire fighting and prevention, as well as rescue teams to carry out researches and give people advice on electrical safety and economical use.
Grid modernization
So as to cope with natural disasters effectively, EVNHCMC has put strong focus on intergrating Science and Technology into grid operation and management. Currently, EVNHCMC has 100% succeeded in operating 110kV substations without human supervision; 100% of medium voltage grids are under control and supervision from afar (via mini Scada). During rainstorm seasons, in case of incidents, operational engineers, with remote control center, will take actions of isolating and zoning the incidents to minimize the areas of power outage.
Besides, power corporations are also developing a program on grid modernization and undergrounding; installation of power lines to prevent breakage of medium voltage lines at 6 Power Companies in crowded areas like schools and markets, so as to contribute to raising the standards of quality and safety in power supply, and to reduce the impact of weather and outside factors.
Annually, power corporations also arranged human resources, especially raise up the spirit of the Youth Union to carry out public projects related to electrical safety, such as: “Alleys with safe, aesthetic and economical power systems”; “Safe, civilized and economical lighting for social security”; “Civilized, clean and safe apartments”; “Safe and economical use of electricity with you”… Written commitments to ensure electrical safety, fire and explosion prevention and fighting are included in power purchase agreements with customers.
EVNHCMC requires the heads of units not to be subjective, neglectful in the prevention and control of natural disasters, to best promote the motto “four on the spot” and the principle of “three ready” in the preparation for sufficient manpower, facilities, equipment and materials to respond to natural disasters or unexpected incidents.
